MELASMA

Defined :

melasma - skin pigmentationSkin condition where pigmentation of the cheeks of the face darkens into tan or brown patches. This is a common condition, which occurs mostly to women during pregnancy and continues for years thereafter. Melasma occurs to Men also. The exact cause of Melasma is debatable – Norammly UV radiations from the Sun and Hormonal Activity in Women are blamed.

·   Epidermal

·   Dermal

·   Mixed Types

TREATMENT OF

MELASMA Advised To :

Melasma should be treated for occurrence of dark, irregular pigmented areas – Brown / Greyish - Brown appearing on the face and occasionally on the neck. It has been observed that women are more affected than men. In fact women having darker complexion could be more prone.

Who Can

Treat :

In the US and Canada: M.D. and Board Certified in Plastic Surgery or an FRCSC

Treatment :

The affected skin is exposed to controlled emissions of intense pulsed light (Lazer or Non Laser as the requirement may be). This Intense Light Energy is absorbed by the targeted tissues in the layers of the skin and veins carrying blood supply. The effect is fading away of unwanted marks. The procedure is non-invasive meaning – no cuts, no wounds, no blood, no pain, no stitches and no down time – one can resume work immediately!

The other Non Laser / Intense Light Treatment options available are :

·   Hydroquinone (HQ) Therapy.

·   Tretinoin (Retin-A, Renova) standalone or in combination with HQ.

·   Azelaic Acid.

·   Mandelic Acid.

·   Chemical Peeling.

Best Treatment Option will be decided by the treating cosmetic surgeon with the consent of the individual.

Period Of

Treatment :

A single sitting on an average should take about 30 minutes with zero down time ! The number of such sitting required will depend on the condition of the skin, age etc. which will be correctly assessed by the treating cosmetic surgeon. Normally there is no Post-operative discomfort. Common Temporary Symptoms with any Intense light therapy may surface immediately after the session like the skin may appear a little flushed and capillaries may seem to be more visible, This would soon fade away, leaving a Younger looking skin.

Post Operative

Treatment :

Generally no specific postoperative treatment is prescribed other than general care. Normally limited sun exposure and to use sunscreen for a few weeks’ after treatment is advised among other precautions.

Facts That You

Should Know:

·   Discontinue birth control pills.

·   Avoid Sun.

·   Use sun block Formulation containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide with an SPF greater than 15. Apply every 3 – 4 hours during sun exposure.
