The surgery can be carried out to achieve reconstructive and or aesthetic objectives. Broadly Hand Surgery involves three main procedures :

Grafting :

It involves transferring of skin, bone, nerves, or other tissue from a healthy body site to the injured body site.

Flap surgery

It Involves moving the skin along with its underlying fat, blood vessels, and muscle from a healthy body site to the injured body site.

HAND SURGERY

Advised To :

Carpal Tunnel

Dupuytren's contracture

Generally the following conditions of the hand require surgical procedure :

·     Congenital Abnormalities / Defects.

·     Arthritis

·     Burns.

·     Contractures.

·     Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – Build up of pressure, due to any reason, in the tunnel running through the wrist carrying major nerves. This can result in a tingling sensation in the hand, often accompanied by numbness, aching, and impaired hand function. Working on a computer keyboard for a long period day after day may cause numbness in the wrist, fingers and thumb of the dominant hand. Females are more prone to this condition than the males because their carpel tunnel is almost one third the size of the male's.

·     Nerve Injuries.

·     Overuse syndrome.

·     Pain Problem.

·     Brachial Plexus injuries.

·     Dupuytren's Contracture – A disorder of skin and underlying tissue forming thick scar-like tissue under the skin of the palm often extending up to the fingers, pulling them toward the palm and restricting motion.

·     Traumatic Injuries.

·     Work-related injuries.

Who Can

Treat :

You are advised to look for the following internationally accepted certifications:

In India: M.Ch. (Magister Chirurgiae) or a D.N.B. (Diplomate of the National Board) (Plastic Surgery)

In the US and Canada: M.D. and Board Certified in Plastic Surgery or an FRCSC

In the UK: FRCS (Plastic Surgery)

Other European Nations: M.D. and Specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Additionally:

Plastic surgeons usually complete training / fellowships in their sub-fields of interest at internationally acclaimed centers and you should take care to note if your surgeon mentions these fellowships or training periods along with their Plastic Surgery qualifications. Rest assured, you will then be consulting some of the best of the plastic surgical fraternity. More . . .

Treatment :

Normally comparatively minor surgical procedures are required which differ in technique from condition to condition. The objective of these surgical procedures are two pronged firstly, to achieve reconstruction and restore normal body function and secondly, to take care of the aesthetics.

Since the techniques differ for every condition we recommend that a dialogue with the treating Plastic surgeon would be the best policy.

Period Of

Treatment :

On an average 2 – 3 weeks should be sufficient. Different techniques will have different treatment time horizons. One thing is for sure that period of treatment is not detrimental in opting for the treatment / surgery – given the immense benefits.

Post Operative

Treatment :

Normally similar to any general surgical procedure. A dialogue with the treating Plastic surgeon would be the best policy.
