Treatment :

This procedure is carried out during Breast Reconstruction. Commonly muscle and skin are removed from the abdomen area. This section skin, fat, muscle (the flap) and the blood supply and re attached at the site of the reconstruction.

Flap procedure can be performed in two ways :

TUNNELLING :

When the flap with its original blood supply intact is slipped under the skin to the affected area.

FREE FLAP :

When the flap is detached from its original location and then reattached at the new location using MICROSURGERY where using a powerful microscope the Plastic surgeon sews back the Flap connecting the tiny blood vessels and nerves and arteries with the aim of restoring normal body function.

Once the flap is in place the plastic surgeon sets about reshaping this flap of muscle, skin and fat into the shape of the opposite breast keeping the dimensions similar.

One of the distinct advantage of using ones own tissue and muscle is that the reconstructed breasts quite closely resemble the natural breast in look and feel. This also rules out the possible complications like bleeding, infection or poor healing which might be associated with implants. Hence in such cases FLAP RECONSTRUCTION is normally preferred over IMPLANTS.
